Mono No Aware

This installation was part of the project Zapping. Organised by Graphic Workshop Daglicht, Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Curated by J.M. Crapanzano in 2006. The presentation of the project was in Strijp S building in Eindhoven city.

Mono No Aware is an installation made with silkscreen prints of birds on paper, printed in glow-in-the-dark ink.
 
The installation was based on my fascination of the Aurora Borealis.
Indigenous Greenlanders believed that the lights were dancing spirits of children who had died at birth.
The Aurora I made was based on drawings of a dead little bird I found in my garden.
 
The moment visitors enter the installation Mono no aware the light in the room turns off. They are surrounded by total darkness.
After a while, when one is used to the total darkness, a glowing swarm of thousand birds is visible. A buzzing sound is filling the room.
Within a minute the glowing is getting weaker and the darkness will return. At that moment the light goes on again.
